Apabila Kementerian Wilayah Persekutuan (KWP) ditubuhkan pada tahun 1978, Jabatan Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (JAWI) telah diletakkan di bawah Kementerian ini. Walaubagaimanapun, pada tahun 1987 Kementerian ini telah dimansuhkan.
